Overview of Dental Programs:
- Children/Adult Services: Preventive and therapeutic services are available for children from birth to 18 years of age and adults from 18 - 21 years only with an emphasis on the first dental visit by age one.
- Prenatal/Maternity Services: Eligible pregnant women participating in the program receive preventive care and non-surgical periodontal therapy during the gestational period. Prenatal patient visits include: oral hygiene instructions for both mother and child, an explanation of bacterial transmission as it relates to childhood caries, recommendations on feeding practices and anticipatory guidance.
- Adult Emergency Clinic (West End location only): Problem-focused emergency evaluation and treatment are offered to address the needs of adult patients of all ages through emergency walk-in clinics.
The Oral Health Initiative Project
In collaboration with Parent Child Incorporated and the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio Department of Dental Hygiene, Metro Health was awarded an Oral Health Initiative Grant through the Office of Head Start. The primary goal of the project is to improve access to dental care for PCI enrollees and their families through the implementation of a fluoride varnish program.
Oral health professionals assist families to access additional dental services and, ultimately, establish a dental home. During the school year each of the 6,789 enrollees receive a dental screening and two applications of fluoride varnish in Head Start centers throughout Bexar County. Oral health data is collected for each child during the screening process. | Print friendly
